Start with the brief

Before choosing furniture: define the room.

Focused questions for a multifunctional room brief, connecting everyday use, dimensions and budget.

Who uses the room, and when?

List the main users and activities that happen together. A room where two people work daily needs different planning from one hosting a relative monthly. Priorities start with the most frequent use.

What needs to stay available?

List items you do not want to clear each time: a monitor, books, equipment or toys. Note whether and how often each can move. This helps assess mechanism movement and surrounding storage.

What should you measure?

Prepare wall dimensions, ceiling height, opening and socket positions, and photos from all sides. Mark air conditioning, curtains, skirtings and projections. Include dimensions and opening clearances for furniture that will remain.

What are the decision parameters?

Separate the furniture budget from services, alterations and installation. Note the completion target, who approves finishes and which decisions remain open. This helps identify relevant options from the first meeting.

What to record in the plan and specification

Checklist before approving the specification

  • A dimensioned drawing with a revision date is attached.

  • Fixed services and retained items are marked.

  • Day and night use and occupancy are defined.

  • A contact, budget framework and target date are identified.

Questions from the planning process

Can a discussion start without a complete architectural plan?

Yes. Initial measurements and photos support an introductory discussion. Final selection and ordering use approved dimensions and specifications, not the initial estimate.

What changes in a multi-room project?

Separate room types, record dimensional differences and group quantities by configuration. Document product-affecting changes even where the overall design is consistent.

This guide addresses planning considerations. Dimensions, loads and installation details depend on the approved model and specification and coordination with the project professionals.
