Micro living: furniture and planning for compact apartments
Micro living with smart furniture: wall beds, sofa beds and folding tables. Plan day and night layouts, storage and specifications for compact homes and projects.

What is micro living?
Micro living describes compact homes in which layout and furniture accommodate several uses within a limited area. Start with the resident’s routine: working, eating, hosting and sleeping, including activities that must happen at the same time. A home for one remote worker needs a different arrangement from a couple’s home or a rental unit. Before selecting furniture, define what must remain available in every layout.
Draw the apartment in day and night modes
Prepare two layouts using actual furniture dimensions. The day plan shows seating, work and storage; the night plan also shows the open bed, operating space and routes to the bathroom and exit. A wall bed can release floor area when closed, while a sofa bed combines seating and sleeping. Assess sleep frequency, user comfort, wall construction and the selected model’s opening envelope.
To choose a Sofa bed compare models by overall sofa width and mattress width. After filtering, check the opening depth on the model page and mark the remaining route alongside the bed on your plan.
Plan storage and the table together
A compact home also needs room for items absent from a catalogue photograph: bedding, cushions, luggage, chairs and table extensions. Wall-mounted folding tables, transforming tables and extending consoles each need a different layout. Check what must move before use, where components are stored and whether storage remains accessible with the bed open. A useful layout includes everyday belongings and the circulation around them.
From one unit to a project specification
For a micro-living development, record furniture models, configurations, finishes and quantities by unit type. Check mirrored layouts, different walls and delivery routes separately. Before a bulk order, review a representative unit with design and operations teams and document the conversion routine. Excellent’s example apartments can provide a starting point, with selections adapted to the actual project dimensions and requirements.

Questions from the planning process
Is micro living only for rental apartments?
No. The planning considerations also apply to compact private homes. In each case, assess the occupants, their routine and the activities the furniture needs to support.
Wall bed or sofa bed in a micro-living apartment?
Compare seating and sleeping comfort, opening envelopes, storage and the daily routine. There is no single solution for every apartment; test a specific configuration on the plan.
This guide addresses planning considerations. Dimensions, loads and installation details depend on the approved model and specification and coordination with the project professionals.
