Start with what the room needs to do by day

For a home office, consider how much floor space you need for the desk, chair and movement. A closed wall bed can release the sleeping area. In a living room that needs a sofa anyway, a sofa bed adds overnight accommodation. Wall beds with integrated sofas also exist, so assess the actual configuration rather than the category alone.

If you choose a wall bed, the next step is to compare vertical and horizontal opening against the room layout.

Measure the room with the bed open too

Mark the open system's length and width beside doors, drawers and furniture that remains. For wall beds, check height, front movement and anchoring. For sofa beds, check opening direction and coffee-table placement. No single circulation width suits every room or user; follow the actual model specification and plan.

For frequent sleeping, try the actual model

If you will open the bed every evening, try the mattress and mechanism before choosing. Check sleeping dimensions, support, mattress compatibility and what needs moving. Comfort depends on the model, mattress and sleeper; neither category is inherently more comfortable.

Preparing the room is part of hosting

Consider linen and pillow storage, a place for guests' bags, and access to lights and sockets with the bed open. Some models allow items to remain in place; others require clearing. Follow the model's instructions. Good hosting solutions are easy to prepare and return to everyday use.

For hotels, consider daily operations too

Hotels, holiday rentals and multi-unit projects also need to consider cleaning, linen changes, service and parts. Commercial suitability and warranty are checked per model; residential suitability does not establish hotel suitability. Compile requirements with the operations team in advance.

What should you bring to an Excellent consultation?

Bring a plan or dimensions, photos of walls and openings, and dimensions of furniture that will stay. Tell us who will sleep there, how often, and other intended uses. Our team can guide your home furniture choice and coordinate with your architect or designer.

How much space does a sofa bed need? Model examples

This table refers to the specific configurations in the specifications and drawings on the model pages. Open depth is the total furniture depth before allowing for circulation; it is not the mattress length. All measurements are in cm.

Model and configurationMattressOverall widthClosed depthOpen depth
Saint Tropez · 160160 × 200195110220
Eze · 160160 × 194197103219

For the Saint Tropez configuration shown, an open depth of 220 cm compared with a closed depth of 110 cm adds 110 cm in front of the sofa. Also allow for circulation and the coffee table. For another configuration or a chair bed, use its own drawing rather than copying these example dimensions.

Checklist before approving the specification

  • The room’s main daytime use is defined.

  • The footprint and movement have been checked in both modes.

  • Sleeping comfort and expected opening frequency were assessed.

  • Storage, access and maintenance suit the configuration.

Questions from the planning process

Which takes less space — a wall bed or a sofa bed?

There is no single answer. A closed wall bed frees the sleeping area, while a sofa bed remains available for seating. Compare each model's open and closed dimensions, along with the other furniture the room needs.

Are sofa beds suitable for sleeping every night?

Suitability depends on the model, mattress and user. For nightly use, try the mattress and mechanism, and confirm that specifications and instructions suit the intended frequency.

Can a wall bed fit into an existing home office?

Sometimes, after checking dimensions, openings, fixing wall and system movement. Check what happens to the desk and work equipment as the bed opens.
