Plan for the space

A home office and guest room in one plan

Plan a home office with a wall bed or sofa bed around fixed equipment, services, privacy, storage and daily conversion.

LGM transforming furniture — shelving and desk in a living room

Decide what remains in use during a stay

Ask whether work continues while guests are staying. If both activities happen at the same time, transforming furniture alone cannot resolve privacy and noise. Define working hours, length of stays and equipment that must remain accessible. Then consider a wall bed with a desk, a separate desk, or a Sofa bed alongside a permanent workstation.

Measure what lives on the desk

A laptop, monitor arm, printer and desk lamp create different conversion requirements. For a moving or rotating worktop, request height and load limits and instructions on clearing it. Do not rely on a styled photograph. Record the existing equipment and check what stays, disconnects or moves into storage each time the bed opens.

Coordinate services with movement

Mark power, data and lighting against both open and closed positions. Coordinate cable routes with the project professionals so they stay clear of moving parts and guest sockets remain accessible at night. Check curtains, window openings and air-conditioning positions too. Finalise services against the approved drawing and specification, not category-level dimensions.

Storage for both work and guests

Separate work documents and equipment from guest shelves, bedding and luggage. Give the desk chair a position that does not block the bed. Test the room with a guest already sleeping: can someone reach storage, switch on a light and leave without moving furniture? That can distinguish two configurations that look similar in photographs.

Single or double wall bed with a desk?

In a small home office, compare the required sleeping capacity with the available wall width and door position. Horizontal and vertical wall beds have different width, height and opening requirements. The catalogue includes Kali Board in single or larger single configurations and Penelope 2 Board as a vertical double system. Assess each against its specification; one fitting a room does not mean the other will fit too.

Check the day-to-night change before approving the plan

Walk through the change in sequence: where the office chair goes, what is removed from the desk, how the worktop and bed move and where the user stands. Check that monitor and lighting cables cannot be stretched or trapped during movement. Confirm sockets and storage only after reviewing the night layout. Whether equipment may remain on an integrated desk depends on the model, item heights and operating instructions.

What to record in the plan and specification

Points to coordinate with the supplier and project team
TopicInformation to gather
WorkstationMonitor, arm, chair and fixed-equipment dimensions.
Night modeOpen footprint, bed access and guest belongings.
ServicesSockets, lighting and cable routes throughout movement.
PrivacySeparate storage and the room’s schedule during guest stays.

Checklist before approving the specification

  • The actual desk equipment has been recorded.

  • There is a location for the chair and items that move.

  • Sockets and cables have been coordinated with the mechanism.

  • Storage access and privacy have been checked for shared use.

Questions from the planning process

Can a monitor stay on a wall-bed desk?

Only when permitted by the configuration and model instructions. Check height, load, monitor arms and cables throughout movement, and confirm with the supplier before selection.

When is a separate desk preferable?

When equipment must remain active, the desk is used while the bed is open, or system limits do not suit the equipment. Base the decision on routines and dimensions.

This guide addresses planning considerations. Dimensions, loads and installation details depend on the approved model and specification and coordination with the project professionals.
